Exterior doors can be made from a variety of materials, though steel is the most most popular. Steel doors are strong, secure plus relatively cheap. Wood is not as common, as this material tends to rot or warp when exposed to moisture. It is typically only used on exterior residential openings, or for openings covered up by an awning or overhang. Fiberglass doors are one of the most expensive options, but even last for most years with little or no maintenance. Operationally, exterior doors can take 1 of four different forms. The most popular is a swinging door, which is hung using hinges or pivots. Overhead doors are kind of like garage doors, plus are primarily used on loading docks and vehicle maintenance facilities. Sliding doors are often automatic, plus slide to 1 side to permit entry or exit. Revolving doors are made of 2 or additional intersecting panels which revolve when operated through manual or electronic means.  

Building homeowners may choose from a large variety of finishes for the doors dependent on the kind of material plus application. Steel doors are usually primed plus painted, with frequent re-touching needed below heavy use. Wood doors can be painted or stained, plus even require regular maintenance. Fiberglass doors are available with integral color that will last for years without any need for maintenance. Doors created from aluminum can scratch or dent, but this harm is just not as noticeable like it would be on a painted exterior door.  

In residential settings, exterior doors commonly are designed to swing into the home, and are used for entry plus exit. In business applications however, most doors are designated as “Entry” or “Exit” in an attempt to control security plus traffic flow. A lot of rear doors, or those returning from a stairwell, are designed for emergency exit only. the doors often have no hardware on the outside side, with panic devices on the inside to allow for fast exiting. Doors designed with secure entry in mind may purely open from the outdoors when they even have been manually released from the inside. These doors mostly come already equipped with intercoms and buzzers to assist in security.
