The Faulty Cooling System 316
There seems to be some BMW cars that suffer from an overheating concern. This known overheating fault tends to happen more on the E36 BMW models. It seems to affect the 316 4 cylinder models in the region of the years of 1996 to 1999. This particular 3 series BMW cars For Sale in this time period tended to leave the factory with dodgy water pumps and head gaskets on certain cars.
Some drivers of these cars experienced their water pumps beginning to sound quite noisy. This was due to the plastic impeller inside the water pump failing causing the car to overheat. This meant that although the pump was turning, the water was not going around. As soon as you hear the water pump sound a little noisy, get it checked before the temperature gauge moves into the red. The new pumps contain modified impellers made of metal which are better.
If your car heater is blowing out cold air and the car seems to be overheating, the next thing to establish is that the thermostat is working properly. As it could be jammed shut. Now and then fluid seems to disappear from the system without any signs where.
Some garages have pointed their digit straight at the head gasket or the head might be cracked and passing water by. After people have replaced the head gaskets, they find that this still has not fixed the problem. A defective thermostat housing has also been to blame. These thermostat houses can warp slightly to let air seep into the cooling system. With an air lock forming in the system, the water can stop flowing round the system. It also appears that still after pressure testing and leak testing of the engine this fault is not easily detectable.
The advice is to swap the thermostat housing first if there is any doubt, so no cash is wasted on changing unnecessary head gaskets. At the same time exchange any rubber hoses that appear to be perished or do not fit snugly to make sure these can be ruled out for any faults. The newer BMW 1 Series and 3 Series do not seem to suffer from any of these problems.
