Taking Out Sailing Dinghy Insurance
When taking out insurance for a sailing dinghy there are many considerations you need to make so it is not the one of the easiest tasks in the world.
If you usually take friends out in your dinghy you should make sure that your chosen sailing dinghy insurance offers cover for your passengers. If this applies to you, a policy that covers the entire amount of people who are travelling on the dinghy will be fine.
If you have any equipment on the boat be sure to inform the insurance company about it and opt for a policy that covers this, also be sure to give the exact make and model of the engine, this is especially important for obvious reasons.
Try and negotiate a new for old type of cover. This means that should the dinghy be damaged beyond repair the insurers will replace it with a new model. Otherwise you will receive a like for like model and as some insurance assessors are renowned for giving poor valuations it could very well mean that you find yourself out of pocket.
Some sailing dinghy insurance companies will put a limit on the amount of money that they will pay out if damage occurs. You may wish to ensure that there is not a limit on your policy. If this is not possible you may offer to have a higher excess limit applied. For instance you may pay the first £200 of any claim. An excess is usually part of the terms and conditions anyway but the higher the excess, the cheaper the quotes for insurance might work out.
You may also wish to read the terms and conditions of the insurance policy so that you know what you are and are not protected against. If boat fell off the trailer for instance would you still be covered.
Is the insurance policy one that includes legal protection? This type of insurance might really go towards saving you a lot of money as all it takes is an accident where a third party implies that you have caused damage to their boat which you dispute. It can be a common occurrence that something like this happens and having the correct legal protection can put you in an enviable position should a case go to court or even for something not as major as that.
