Role That A Regiment Played In Military History
If you’re even remotely interested in past battles, you should know about the Military History channel. There are quite a few historic battles described there. Documentaries of the key players in the wars (Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte etc.) are also presented. Looking at these from the perspective of a spectator makes them all seem so surreal. Military history has always been a passion for some people, especially those who like hearing stories about generals, soldiers and spies.
One thing that might prove to be a great discovery is the role of regiments in military history.
Combat studies are more easily elucidated if the structure of how a battle is fought is clear. A hierarchy of command is necessary so that each and every order is followed to the letter by everyone in the unit. The way these units act as one group despite their numbers is fascinating. It is said that regiments were called such during the sixteenth century, in France. A military unit that has a certain structure and a hierarchy of command is a regiment. A regiment follows a strict hierarchy, and most of the orders come from the Lieutenant Colonel.
Although they all look the same on formation, the members of a regiment are not all combative in function. Some do solely combat-related tasks, some do administrative work, and there are others who can do both when the situation calls for it. Each regiment should be autonomous, which means everything that a small unit of men needs should be present, including administrative functions and combat staff. Some of these administrative tasks that need to be performed by members of a regiment include human resource functions and training.
The most significant part of the regiment is its combat arm. If you will notice from war documentaries, most of those who survived the war and belonged in the same regiment became friends for life even during the time of peace. To say that the members of a regiment are tight is an understatement; they are comrades at arms that depend on each other for survival especially during a time of war.
The regimental system is still applied in today’s world. The system functions at its best when there’s a special need to work as a team, such as when small scale police actions are needed. The hierarchical structure of following orders is also useful for operations for stopping an insurgency. An autonomous unit system like that of a regiment is also useful when a military unit needs to be deployed away from the base.
