Linen is a specific type of material that is produced from the fibers of the flax plant. Linen takes some skill to create and is not easily produced like some of the other more common materials used in the manufacturing process. When you think of summer clothing you probably don’t consider linen but it is in fact a very good material that allows your body to breathe.

Linen has been traditionally used in clothing and is completely different from modern day Billabong, Zoo York and Animal Clothing.

Linens history is in fact longer than many people may have imagined. In the 4th Century BC everyone was growing their own flax plants this meant that linen was readily available to be used for all different types of things. What individuals would do is take the flax plant fibres and weave them together to make clothes for their families. Egypt was the first place in history to be recognised as having a linen industry and it is estimated this was an active part of their culture nearly 4000 years ago.

Linen because of its value was a sign of wealth and prosperity for Egyptians. In fact it was here that linen started to be used on tables, first amongst the wealth but soon spreading to the entire Egyptian community.

Around the world the use of linen as tableware became common place and today many different varieties are available. This was the time when linen was first used in clothing. It would take the skill of a fine tailor to make the garments from linen but the result was an elegant and durable piece of clothing.

Thanks to the rigidness of linen it was considered better than cotton for clothing and it is only in modern times that cotton thanks to is cheapness has become more widely used in clothing.

Clothing is and tableware is not the only use of linen one other use includes as a canvas for oil paintings. Using linen as the canvas for oil paintings has been known to add some extra quality in the areas of texture and lighting to the paintings.

There are lots of other uses for linen, which include wallpaper, window treatments and weaving.
