Budgeting That New Home

Despite all my years I still feel like a little boy within. I have a hard time looking in the mirror and locating a fully realized mature man. I might have considered the birth of my 2nd child might have changed it, but I still appear to be in denial of the aging process.

In regards to aging — or instead fighting it off — my dear wife and I recently moved into a brand new home and it features enough space in its basement for the home gym my wife has always sought. Of course, I’m seeing dollar signs when I brainstorm all the small and big items essential, from the required but oft-forgotten weight-lifting benches and exercise mats to selecting the best of the many stationary bikes. An exercise bike can be tricky these days. Do I go with a recumbent or an upright stationary bike? Should I go with an analog or digital?

My dear wife seems set on getting one of those elliptical machines as well. You understood that right. One of the stationary bikes and an elliptical trainer — not one or the other. My estimate is that the extra exercise equipment goes with the stretch mark cream she started using after the birth of youngest child. Oh boy I’m gonna get it for that joke.

I must be deliberate with our budget because our new house is more of a fixer-upper. We wanted it to be this way, yet we still have to carefully budget every little thing, even the cabinet knob (I’m not kidding). My wife has an ambitious kitchen cabinet remodeling design plotted, but must remind her the sink for the bathroom she wishes installed will cost a pretty penny, as well.

Gratefully, she and I both appreciate the rustic, organic look, so we are furnishing our new home with unfinished furniture. Yes, it still needs a little finishing, but we can keep the costs down and create better furniture than we might buy in any store.

I discovered a great with some decent, natural knotting and a entryway table in matching cedar. For our patio outside we are exploring outside fireplaces and we’ll go with some budget wicker furniture initially.

Furnishing a new house might seem so adult, but I cannot help but feel like I am just playing house. The new exercise equipment and furniture merely feel like a new generation of toys.
